Students as Avatars: Pedagogy, Psychology, and Learning
In this presentation, the author outlines pedagogical as well as psychological considerations in applying a synchronous 3D virtual world environment (OpenSim) in an instructional setting. Specific pedagogical methods used to increase the quality of learning in a virtual 3D environment will be demonstrated (e.g. guided discussions, case studies, review of student work by students, captured chat logs, etc.). Psychological theory around student engagement and learning using virtual world technologies will be described, and the author's own qualitative data will be shared that suggests virtual environments can enhance learning for students, especially those who are less extroverted in the classroom setting.
